How to Help Kids with Language Disorders
Some people may consider language and speech sounds as on and the same, but there lies a huge difference between these two. Language is a sign system used to expand concepts and allows understanding. It is articulated through speech, but it can also be transmitted through other means such as sign language and musical notations. Children with linguistic proficiency can have a distinct advantage in schools as there the lectures are delivered in a language. Language plays a vital role in academics.
Therefore, it is not wrong if anyone comments that children with language dysfunction usually have a troubled educational career. Language disorders in children can be divided into two kinds- expressive language disorder and receptive language disorder. In the former kind of disorder, children often fail to express their feelings to others; whereas in the latter one, children could not understand the meaning of what people conveyed to them.
There are some cases where receptive-expressive language disorder may be seen among children. In such situations, they can neither express their feelings nor can understand what people convey to them.In infants, language development starts at a very early age. This is influenced by the environment in which they are born and are growing. This developmental process also depends on the child's ability to hear and to see. The language disorders begin around the age of four. Brain injury may be a cause of mixed language disorder and these are sometimes misdiagnosed as developmental disorders. Language disorders may happen in children with other developmental troubles, autistic spectrum disorders, hearing loss, and learning disabilities.
Damage to the central nervous system, known as aphasia, may also be the cause of language disorder among children. Some people often mix language disorder with delayed speech development. In speech disorder, children takes a little more time to develop speech faculties as compared to a normal child. Children with language difficulties may face problems understanding the directions that are instructed to them and can also face problems organizing their thoughts. Sentence construction and finding the right word may also be a difficulty to such children. These children sometime get stuck while communicating with others because of their language disabilities.
The social setting often becomes a problematic field for children with language problems. They feel suffocated while in a party or in other places where they meet a large number of people. Parents of these children can consult a language or speech therapist to treat their child's problems.
Psychological therapy is also recommended because of the possibility of related emotional or behavioral problems. Parents can also personally help these children to come out of this situation. Interaction with the community members from a very early age can solve this problem of language disorder. Children who are shy in nature feel awkward while mixing in school mates. A supportive environment in school is the most important need of these children. Naturalistic Approaches make use of real-life contexts to facilitate language learning in an incidental fashion. Combined Approaches have led to the production of structured materials that target specific targets in a realistic format.
